Slack
Tips[edit | edit source]
Joining channels[edit | edit source]
There is a set of important default channels that you should be added to automatically when you join the Slack (you are free to leave some of them if they are not relevant to you). But there are also several channels that you have to explicitly join. Here's how to do so (on desktop app / web):
- At the bottom of the channel list there should be the text "+ Add channels". Click it.
- In the pop-up, click "Browse channels".
Recommendations[edit | edit source]
Notification settings[edit | edit source]
NOTE: There is a feature to temporarily pause notifications. Click on your profile, then select "Pause notifications".
NOTE: Slack has a mobile app that sends push notifications. Alternatively you can get notifications sent to your email.
- #announcements -- Notifications for all new messages. Announcements are somewhat rare, and some of the less important ones won't mention everyone. However we will try to remember to mention everyone when sending important announcements, so you can also go with Notifications only for mentions.
- Most other channels -- Notifications only for mentions. That way you won't be overwhelmed by notifications.
